What It Is

GTRE is DRDO's lead laboratory for aero-engine R&D. Its flagship programme is the Kaveri turbofan engine, originally developed for the LCA Tejas but not adopted due to weight and thrust shortfalls. The Kaveri has been used as a technology demonstrator and a maritime derivative (Kaveri Marine) was tested for naval applications. GTRE is now developing the Kaveri derivative for the Ghatak UCAV and AMCA powerplant studies, and is part of the MoD's aero-engine roadmap with Safran and GE Aerospace partnerships.
