What It Is
Electronic warfare (EW) is the discipline of controlling the electromagnetic spectrum to gain tactical and strategic advantage. It encompasses three pillars: Electronic Support (ES) — detecting, locating, and classifying hostile radar and communication emissions; Electronic Countermeasures (ECM) — jamming, deceiving, or destroying hostile electromagnetic systems; and Electronic Counter-Countermeasures (ECCM) — protecting one's own systems from enemy EW. Modern EW also includes Electronic Intelligence (ELINT) — the strategic collection and analysis of adversary electronic emissions. For India, EW is both a proven capability and a persistent vulnerability. The Indian Air Force and Navy operate Israeli EW suites on frontline platforms — the Elisra/S SPECTRA-like self-protection on the Su-30MKI fleet, and IAI/ELTA ESM systems on naval vessels. The Rafale carries the Thales SPECTRA EW suite, one of the most advanced in the world. However, India has no fully indigenous EW suite fielded at scale. DRDO's Defence Electronics Research Laboratory (DLRL, Hyderabad) has developed several EW subsystems, including the Ajanta EW suite (BEL) for naval vessels, and various SIGINT/ELINT systems for the Indian Army. The Indian Army's tactical EW capability was validated during Operation Sindoor (May 2025), where EW played a role in suppressing Pakistani radar systems. The core industrial challenge is wideband digital receiver technology, high-power microwave jamming, and the cognitive/AI-driven threat-adaptation software that defines modern EW suites. The DRDO's EMID (Electronic Mission Integrated Dashboard) programme aims to deliver an integrated EW management system, but fielding timelines remain uncertain.
Deployments & Procurement
Import Dependencies
India is significantly dependent on Israeli and European EW subsystems for current frontline platforms.
| Component | Severity | Note | Pillar | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wideband digital EW receivers | Critical | State-of-the-art digital receivers for ESM/ELINT are dominated by Israel (ELTA, Elisra), US, and European suppliers; Indian domestic production is limited to narrower-band systems. | /research/pillars/defence/ | [1] |
| High-power microwave (HPM) jamming modules | High | Effective ECM against modern radars requires high-power, wideband jamming; DRDO/DLRL developing but not yet fielded at scale. | /research/pillars/defence/ | [1] |
| EW threat libraries and electronic order of battle (EOB) databases | High | Maintaining a real-time, comprehensive library of adversary radar/emission signatures requires continuous intelligence collection; Israel and US have significant advantages here. | /research/pillars/defence/ | |
| Integrated EW management software (EMID) | Medium | DRDO EMID programme under development; software-defined EW requires advanced real-time processing and AI/ML integration. | /research/pillars/defence/ |
Intelligence Assessment
Methodology: /research/methodology
DRDO DLRL leads indigenous EW design; however, most operational EW suites are Israeli or French in origin.

BEL produces some EW subsystems; complete EW suite production capability is limited; Israeli systems assembled/installed under licence or direct import.
Sources: [1]
Wideband digital receivers and HPM jamming modules are heavily import-dependent; threat library maintenance requires foreign intelligence partnerships.

Indian EW systems deployed across IAF, Navy, and Army, but primarily foreign-origin; indigenous systems at limited scale.
No indigenous EW system currently exported; competition from entrenched Israeli, French, and US suppliers is formidable.

FAQ
Why is Israel India's primary EW supplier?
Israel has decades of combat-proven EW expertise and a mature defence electronics industry (IAI/ELTA, Elisra, Rafael). India-Israel defence cooperation since the 1990s has included EW technology transfer and joint development. Israeli EW systems were fitted to the Su-30MKI and Indian Navy warships because India lacked a comparable indigenous alternative at the time. The Thales SPECTRA suite on the Rafale was selected as part of the Rafale procurement, not as an Indian EW programme.

What is cognitive EW and why does it matter?
Cognitive electronic warfare uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to adapt jamming strategies in real-time based on the observed threat environment. Instead of relying on pre-programmed threat libraries, a cognitive EW system can learn and respond to novel or evolving threats. This is the frontier of EW technology, pursued by the US, Israel, and European defence firms. India's DRDO is working on cognitive EW capabilities, but fielding timelines are uncertain.

Did EW play a role in Operation Sindoor?
The Indian Army's Electronic Warfare corps was reported to have been actively deployed during Operation Sindoor (May 2025), contributing to the suppression of Pakistani radar systems and communication networks. The precise systems used and the tactical impact have not been fully disclosed, but the operation validated the operational relevance of EW in India's military doctrine.
