HAL Koraput Marks Its 2,000th Aero-Engine and Breaks Ground on a Second Shakti Line - Licensed Capacity, Not Yet Indigenous Design

Signal in brief
  • HAL Koraput is marking its 2,000th aero-engine delivery, with the Defence Minister due to attend on 6 October 2026.
  • A Rs 218 crore second Shakti engine production line is to receive its foundation stone; it is planned, with no completion date or output target published.
  • Shakti is the Safran Ardiden 1H1 developed jointly with Safran, so the line adds Indian capacity for a licensed engine, not a fully indigenous design.
  • A reported 312-engine requirement for the Prachand contract is trade-report arithmetic, not an official order.

The development

Pre-event reports say Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will attend HAL's Koraput division in Odisha on 6 October 2026 to mark the delivery of its 2,000th aero-engine and to lay the foundation stone for a new Rs 218 crore facility, a second production line for the Shakti engine. The stated purpose is to raise manufacturing capacity for the Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopter and the Prachand Light Combat Helicopter. Odisha's Chief Minister, the Defence Production Secretary and HAL's chairman are listed as attending. I could not find post-event coverage when writing this, so the details come from announcements made before the ceremony. No completion date or annual output target has been published.

What Shakti is

Shakti is the Indian designation for the Safran Ardiden 1H1, developed jointly by HAL and Safran Helicopter Engines, in the 1,400-2,000 shaft horsepower class with dual-channel FADEC. It powers Dhruv Mk III and Mk IV variants, and each Prachand needs two engines. One trade report links this to a Rs 62,700 crore contract for 156 Prachand helicopters, which would imply at least 312 engines for that contract alone. That figure is the report's arithmetic and is not an official engine order.

The dependency frame

A second line removes a capacity bottleneck for helicopter engines, which matters when platform output is rising. It does not change who owns the core design: the engine is a joint programme with a foreign partner, and trade reports describe a separate Aravalli programme as the route to deeper joint development. The useful test of progress is how much of the engine, including hot-section parts, control electronics and castings, is made in India, and how much stays imported under licence.

What to watch

  • Whether the foundation stone event took place and any completion date or annual capacity figure that follows.
  • Indian content in Shakti engines, and any transfer of hot-section or control-system work.
  • Confirmed engine orders tied to Prachand and Dhruv deliveries.
  • Progress of the Aravalli programme as a deeper domestic engine path.
