DRDO's Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE), with Hyderabad-based Azad Engineering as the production partner, has realised India's first indigenous expendable turbojet in the 350 kg thrust class. The fully built engine was delivered to GTRE on 22 July 2026.
The significance is not the engine; it is the dependency it removes. Small jet propulsion for expendable platforms — cruise missiles, loitering munitions, target drones — has been one of the layers India could not make, forcing imports or constraining the range and payload of otherwise indigenous systems. Only a handful of countries hold this capability.
This is the propulsion chokepoint from our loitering-munitions and drone work made concrete. An expendable engine must be cheap enough to throw away yet reliable enough to fly once — a harder commercial problem than a reusable one, and the reason a domestic production line matters more than a one-off prototype.
The opening now sits downstream of GTRE: the supplier base for turbine discs, blades, combustors and fuel systems that an expendable engine consumes in volume. A private manufacturer taking the build is the signal to watch — it points to a components ecosystem, not just a lab result.
