What It Is

MBDA is the European missile systems prime and a strategic Indian partner through two principal channels: (i) weapons integration on the IAF's 36 Dassault Rafale fighters — the MICA IR/RF air-to-air missile (used in the May 2025 Pakistan clash) and Meteor beyond-visual-range missile; MBDA announced in May 2026 an agreement with the IAF to establish local MRO capability for the MICA missile; and (ii) the L&T MBDA Missile Systems Ltd JV (formed Feb 2017, missile integration facility operational Feb 2020) — India's first private-sector missile JV with a foreign OEM, offering fifth-generation ATGMs and naval missiles. MBDA also signed a Sep 2019 agreement with BDL to assemble missiles in India and has offered Brimstone integration on India's future MQ-9B fleet (Nov 2023).

FAQ

Which MBDA missiles are integrated on India's Rafale fighters?

The IAF's 36 Dassault Rafale fighters are equipped with two MBDA air-to-air missiles: the MICA (IR/RF) as the primary short/medium-range weapon, and the Meteor beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile. MICA was the only AAM carried during the May 2025 India-Pakistan air clash. In May 2026 MBDA announced an agreement with the IAF to establish local MRO capability for the MICA missile.

What is the L&T MBDA joint venture?

L&T MBDA Missile Systems Ltd is a 50:50 joint venture formed in February 2017 between Larsen & Toubro (India) and MBDA Missile Systems. Its missile integration facility became operational in February 2020 — India's first private-sector missile JV with a foreign OEM. The JV offers fifth-generation ATGMs and naval missiles for Indian requirements, and showcased capabilities at Aero India 2025.

Has MBDA offered Brimstone missiles to India?

Yes. In November 2023 MBDA publicly confirmed it is ready to consider integration of Brimstone precision-strike missiles onto the MQ-9B SeaGuardian/SkyGuardian Predator drones being procured by India from General Atomics — providing a potential European precision-strike option for India's future HALE RPAS fleet.
